The Introductction of Alpha-Bisabolol

Alpha-Bisabolol is a kind of sesquiterpenoid compound, which exists in the essential oils of Asteraceae plants, such as the whole herb and flower of Matthiola, Brazilian chrysanthemum, vanilla chrysanthemum and so on, and it can be also extracted from myrrh tree of olive plant.There are two structures of Bisabolol: alpha-body and beta-body, and alpha-Bisabolol exists in the essential oils of spring chrysanthemum, with the content of 17%; β-bisabolol exists in the essential oils of cotton buds and other essential oils. Alpha-Bisabolol mainly exists in the essential oil of cotton buds, and also exists in the essential oils of corn oil, camphor oil, frankincense oil and so on.

According to different sources, Alpha-Bisabolol can be categorized into synthetic and natural sources. Alpha-Bisabolol from synthetic sources generally uses acacia alcohol as the initial material, which is purified by distillation, and finally obtains racemic (±)-Alpha-Bisabolol, of which the biologically active (-)-Alpha-Bisabolol content is low. Natural sources of Alpha-Bisabolol are generally extracted from the Brazilian shrub (Candeia), but a stable long-term supply cannot be maintained due to seasonal and environmental factors.

Natural Alpha-Bisabolol is a yellowish viscous oil with a slight characteristic odor, soluble in lower alcohols such as ethanol and isopropanol, as well as in fatty alcohols and triglycerides, but almost insoluble in glycerin and water.

Alpha-Bisabolol can be used in skin care products as an active ingredient in the care of sensitive skin, where it has not only anti-inflammatory properties, but has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity, anti-irritant efficacy, skin protective efficacy, restorative efficacy, and direct efficacy in wash-off products.
