The Introduction of Minoxidil

Minoxidil, also known as 6- (1-piperidinyl) -2,4-pyrimidinediamine-3-oxide, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C9H15N5O. It is a white crystalline powder and is clinically used as a potassium ion channel opener. It can directly relax vascular smooth muscle and has a strong arteriolar dilation effect, reducing peripheral resistance and blood pressure, but has no effect on volume vessels, thus promoting venous reflux. At the same time, cardiac output and heart rate can be increased due to reflex regulation and positive frequency effect, but orthostatic hypotension will not be caused.

Minoxidil is a white or almost white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water or chloroform, slightly soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in aceton*, and soluble in glacial acetic acid. It can directly act on the blood vessel wall, dilate small arteries, reduce peripheral resistance, and lower blood pressure. It can also increase heart rate and cardiac output, but its antihypertensive effect is more significant and lasting than that of hydralazine.

Minoxidil directly dilates small arteries, thereby reducing blood pressure, but the specific mechanism is not yet known. This product does not dilate small veins. The decrease in peripheral vascular resistance leads to an increase in reflex heart rate and cardiac output. After hypotension, the activity of renin increases, causing water and sodium retention. This product does not interfere with blood vessel movement reflex, so orthostatic hypotension does not occur. Minodil is a commonly used and effective drug for treating hair loss, but its pharmacological effects and target cells are not very clear. Minoxidil is used for severe or refractory hypertension and renal hypertension, and its antihypertensive effect is stronger than that of hydrazine. It has a synergistic effect when used in combination with propranolol and can offset the adverse reactions of both.

Minoxidil is locally used for male cicatricial alopecia (alopecia areata).
