USAGE | Finasteride is a specific inhibitor of sd type II 5α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts to DHT. By inhibiting type II 5α-reductase, this conversion is blocked, resulting in significant decreases in serum and tissue DHT concentrations. as an oral treatment for androgenetic alopecia after men taking finasteride (5 mg/ day) for prostate enlargement noticed regrowth of their hair. Finasteride is indicated for use in men only. |
What is Finasteride ?
Finasteride is an oral medication often used to treat Androgenetic Alopecia. It is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that inhibits the production of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thereby slowing or stopping hair loss and promoting hair growth
Male pattern baldness is a common genetic disorder that usually begins to appear after puberty. Its pathogenesis is related to male hormones, especially DHT. DHT shrinks hair follicles, causing hair to become smaller, shorter, thinner, and eventually fall out. Finasteride can inhibit the activity of 5α-reductase, thereby reducing the production of DHT, protecting hair follicles, and promoting hair growth.
The therapeutic effects of finasteride vary from person to person, and it usually takes 3-6 months to see significant results. In one study, 83 percent of men who took finasteride had an increase in hair volume and thicker hair within 1 year. Another study showed that finasteride can reduce the amount of hair lost and increase the diameter and density of hair. Side effects of finasteride include seual dysfunction, breast hyperplasia, rash, and headache. One of the most common side effects is seual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction, decreased libido and so on. These side effects usually disappear after stopping the drug. Therefore, finasteride is not suitable for men who already have seual dysfunction, or those who are very sensitive to seual dysfunction.
Overall, finasteride is an effective treatment for male pattern hair loss. It can slow or stop hair loss and promote hair growth. However, it also has some side effects, especially seual dysfunction. Therefore, before using finasteride, you should consult your doctor to understand your health status and risk factors in order to make an informed decision.
Finasteride is an antiandrogen which acts by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase. It is used as a treatment in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in low doses, and prostate cancer in higher doses. It is also indicated for use in combination with doxazosin therapy to reduce the risk for symptomatic progression of BPH. Additionally, it is registered in many countries for androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness).
Finasteride was approved initially in 1992, a treatment for prostate enlargement, but the sponsor had studied 1 mg of finasteride and demonstrated hair growth in male pattern hair loss. On December 22, 1997, the FDA approved finasteride to treat male pattern hair loss.
Application
Finasteride works by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body. DHT normally causes your prostate to grow larger.
The decrease in DHT helps prevent your prostate from growing larger. It also leads to increased hair growth and decreased hair loss of the hair on your head. Hair growth on other parts of the body isn't affected.
