The Introductction of Niclosamide
Niclosamide is yellow-white crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless. Melting point 225-230℃. Insoluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol, chloroform, cyclohexanone, ethe* and sodium hydroxide solution.
Niclosamide is a kind of eel killer (Iampricide), is also a kind of snail killer (molluscicide), for salicylamide derivatives, its anthelmintic mechanism is to inhibit the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation process in the worm's cells, the generation of energy substance ATP is reduced, so that the tapeworm's head segment and the adjacent segments deteriorate, and the worms are dislodged from the intestinal wall with the feces and discharged out of the body. It is not effective against eggs[1] . The dead segments are easily digested and broken down by proteases in the intestinal lumen, releasing eggs, which may cause cysticercosis. It is also effective against the caecal larvae of snails and Schistosoma japonicum. It can kill many kinds of snails, beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata), pork tapeworm (Taeniasolium), fish tapeworm broad-jointed tapeworm, short membranous cestode, and caecilians (Cercariae).
The Application & Function of Niclosamide
In agriculture, Niclosamide is mainly used to kill Fukushu snails (also known as big bottle snails, apple snails, Pomacea canaliculata) in rice fields.
Meanwhile, in public health control, Niclosamide is used to kill nail snails (the intermediate host of schistosomes). Clonidine produces rapid metabolic changes in water and has a short duration of action.
Niclosamide is also used commercially in fish ponds to kill and remove unwanted fish before the ponds are refreshed. Clonidine is very toxic to fish, but has only a short half-life in water, and it only takes a few days after application of this fish killer before new fish can be introduced.
