Sitapliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) suppressor that controls blood sugar levels by protecting and enhancing the action of endogenous gut glucogenin. Glucose-dependent insulin-releasing stimulating peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are intestinal hypoglycemic hormones released in response to dietary intake.
Function:
Sitapliptin inhibits the degradation of intestinal glucagon via DPP-4, thereby enhancing the function of GLP-1 and GIP, increasing insulin release and reducing circulating glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner. The drug selectively inhibited DPP-4, but had no inhibitory activity on DPP-8 or DPP-9.
