Chlorhexidine gluconate is a cationic surface-active preservative with broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect, which is mainly used as a disinfectant and antiseptic.
The mechanism of action of chlorhexidine gluconate is to alter the permeability of bacterial cell membranes. Certain Staphylococcus, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli and Propionibacterium anaerobicum are highly sensitive to it, Streptococcus haemophilus is moderately sensitive, and Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas spp, Klebsiella spp and Gram-negative cocci (such as Weyongococcus spp) are lowly sensitive. Its antibacterial effect on gram-positive and negative bacteria is stronger than that of disinfectants such as benzalkonium bromide.
Chlorhexidine gluconate remains effective in the presence of serum, blood, etc.
The mechanism of action of chlorhexidine gluconate is adsorption on the permeability barrier of bacterial plasma membrane, so that the cell contents leak out and exert antibacterial effect. It has an antibacterial effect at low concentrations and a bactericidal effect at high concentrations.
Chlorhexidine gluconate is fast-acting, non-corrosive to metals and fabrics, slightly affected by organic matter, and has good stability. From the toxicological tests on animals, chlorhexidine gluconate disinfectant has no stinging effect on skin and mucous membrane; acute oral toxicity in rats is practically non-toxic; no micronucleogenic effect on mouse bone marrow multi-stained erythrocytes; no toxic effect was observed in all dose groups in subacute toxicity test.
Chlorhexidine gluconate is mainly made into disinfectant solution which is a low effect disinfectant with rapid killing of septic bacteria, intestinal pathogenic bacteria, common pathogenic bacteria of hospital infection, pathogenic bacteria and pathogenic yeast in the air, and is suitable for long term sterilization protection of hands and other parts of the skin. Chlorhexidine gluconate disinfectant solution is also a low effect broad-spectrum bactericidal agent with fast-acting bactericidal effect, which can kill purulent cocci, intestinal pathogenic bacteria, common pathogenic bacteria of hospital infections, airborne pathogenic bacteria and pathogenic yeast, and is suitable for long-lasting bactericidal protection of skin at injection sites and surgical sites.
