The Introductction of Bimatoprost
Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin drug, bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide F2α derivative, which can selectively mimic the effect of prostamide produced in vivo, causing an increase in the rate of atrial aqueous production and a decrease in resistance to atrial aqueous outflow, reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing atrial aqueous outflow from trabecular meshwork channels and uveoscleral channels. It is indicated for the treatment of patients with open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT) in whom other IOP-lowering drugs are ineffective.
Bimatoprost reduces IOP by increasing atrial aqueous flow from trabecular meshwork channels and uveoscleral channels and decreasing superficial scleral venous pressure. Brukaker et al. showed that 0.03% bimatoprost drops in normal volunteers resulted in a 20% decrease in IOP, a 26% decrease in tension resistance to atrial aqueous flow, and a 31% decrease in surface resistance to atrial aqueous flow.
The Application & function of Bimatoprost
Bimatoprost was first used to treat ocular diseases such as glaucoma under the drug name Lumigan. However, during the treatment, patients unexpectedly noticed a significant increase in the diameter, length and density of their eyelashes. Bimatoprost was then used in clinical trials for eyelash aesthetics, and its dramatic effect on eyelash thickening and density led directly to the launch of Lattise by Allergan, the company that manufactures Lumigan, which was approved by the FDA in December 2008 as a professional product for darkening and thickening eyelashes.
