The Introductction of Secnidazole

Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole anti-protozoal and anaerobic drug, its structure and pharmacological action is similar to metronidazole, white to off-white or yellowish crystalline powder at room temperature, odorless, bitter taste, with antitrichomonas and anti-amoebic protozoa effect. It was originally developed by the French pharmaceutical company Rhone-PoulencRorer, which acts on the growth period of protozoa or anaerobic bacteria, disrupting the DNA strand or inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, resulting in the death of protozoa and anaerobic bacteria.

Secnidazole is chemically known as 1-(2-hydroxypropyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole, with molecular formula C7H11N3O3, molecular weight 185.18100, density 1.39g/cm3, melting point 76ºC, boiling point 396.1ºC at 760mmHg, flash point 193.4ºC and refractive index 1.597.

Secnidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole antiprotozoal/microbial agent with a structure and pharmacological action similar to that of metronidazole. The in vitro anthelmintic spectrum of Secnidazole is comparable to that of metronidazole, including Trichomonas vaginalis, Trichomonas bovis, Amoeba dysenteriae, and Giardia lamblia (Giardia duodenalis, Giardia intestinalis). The MIC against Trichomonas vaginalis was similar to that of metronidazole (0.7 μg/ml), and the MIC against Amoeba dysenteriae was similar for both (6 μg/ml). The minimum inhibitory concentration of Secnidazole against Giardia duodenalis (0.2 μg/ml) was significantly lower than that of metronidazole (1.2 μg/ml), but its clinical relevance was not clear.

It is a 5-nitroimidazole anti-protozoal and anaerobic drug that acts on the growth phase of protozoa or anaerobic bacteria, disrupting the DNA strand or inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, leading to the death of protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It has strong killing effect on trichomonas in genitourinary organs, amoebic protozoa and Giardia in intestines and tissues.
