Bacitracin methylene disalicylate is a reaction product of Bacillus licheniformis secondary metabolite bacitracin and methylene salicylic acid, which is a new type of feed drug additive.

Bacitracin methylene disalicylate is extremely potent against Gram-positive bacteria, and the main mechanism is to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Bacteria maintain their structural integrity by their cell walls and keep their osmotic pressure stable. Under normal conditions peptidoglycan precursors are synthesized in the cytoplasm and cross the cell membrane via pyrophosphate carriers. When the peptidoglycan precursor is released at the site of peptidoglycan synthesis in the cell wall, the lipid carrier transporting the peptidoglycan precursor remains on the cell membrane in the form of pyrophosphate. At this time, the bacillus methylene-salicylate peptide binds to pyrophosphate and inhibits the dephosphorylation of pyrophosphate, thus preventing the transport of peptidoglycan precursors, which in turn inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan, causing the cell wall to be defective, the intracellular osmotic pressure to be imbalanced, and the bacteria to become deformed and swollen, rupture and die. Methylenesalicylic acid bacillus peptide mainly acts on the lytic phase of bacteria, so that its growth and reproduction are blocked, not only bactericidal, but also bacteriolytic.
