The Introductction of Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of alternating sugar chains (N-acetylgalactosamine and glucuronic acid). It is usually attached to proteins as part of a proteoglycan. Chondroitin chains can have over 100 individual sugars, each of which can be sulfated in different positions and amounts. Chondroitin sulfate is an important structural component of cartilage and provides most of the resistance to compression. Togethe* with glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate has become a widely used dietary supplement for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
Chondroitin Sulfate is a white or off-white powder; odorless; hygroscopic. The aqueous solution of this product is viscous and does not coagulate when heated. It is soluble in water, insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, aceton*, and ethe*, etc. Its salts are more stable to heat, and are not destroyed by heat up to 80℃. Chondroitin sulfate aqueous solution, meet higher temperature or acid that is not stable, mainly deacetylation or degradation into monosaccharides or polysaccharides of small molecular weight.
The Application & Function of Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin is used in dietary supplements as an alternative medicine for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is also approved and regulated as a symptomatic slow-acting drug (SYSADOA) for this disease in Europe and some other countries. It is usually sold with glucosamine.
Chondroitin and commonly used glucosamine should not be used to treat patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee, as there is evidence that these treatments do not provide relief from this condition.
Chondroitin has been shown to be promising in the treatment of coronary artery disease. In a six-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 60 subjects published in 1973, there was a 350% reduction in fatal heart attacks in the chondroitin sulfate group compared to the control group. When data on non-fatal cardiovascular events were analyzed, the rate of non-fatal heart attacks was 16% in the control group compared to 0% in the chondroitin sulfate-treated group.
