The Introductction of Inositol

 

Inositol, also known as cyclohexanehexanol, is widely distributed in animals and plants and is a growth factor for animals and microorganisms. It was first isolated from the heart muscle and liver. Inositol exists in nature in several cis and trans isomers, the naturally occurring isomer being cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-cyclohexanehexanol.


Inositol is a white crystalline or crystalline powder, odorless and sweet in taste. Relative density 1.752(anhydrous), 1.524(dihydrate), melting point 225~227℃(anhydrous), 218℃(dihydrate), boiling point 319℃. Soluble in water (25℃, 14g/100mL; 60℃, 28g/100mL), slightly soluble in ethanol, glacial acetic acid, ethylene glycol and glycerol, insoluble in ethe*, aceton* and chloroform. Stable in air, stable to heat, strong acids and bases, but easily hygroscopic.


Inositol exists in nature in free or bound form in all living tissues, and is a common component of plant and animal cells. It can be synthesized by microorganisms in the digestive tract and is involved in the metabolism of sugars and lipids in the body. In animals, it exists mainly in the form of phosphatidylinositol, and is most abundant in brain marrow, cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle; in plants, it exists mainly in the form of phosphatidylinositol, and can combine with calcium, zinc and iron to form insoluble compounds that interfere with their digestion and absorption. When animals lack inositol in their diets, hair loss occurs and development is affected. Inositol is related to intracellular calcium metabolism, and its triphosphate derivatives can be released from lipid conjugates after cell stimulation, acting as second messengers, mobilizing intracellular calcium ions and regulating many cellular activities, such as secretion, metabolism, phototransduction and cell division.
