The Introductction of Camphor

Camphor, IUPAC name 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one, is a terpene organic compound with the chemical formula C10H16O. It is a white or transparent waxy solid at room temperature, and can be used to repel insects.


Natural camphor, also known as dextro camphor (D-camphor), for the camphor plant camphor branches, trunks, roots, by water vapor distillation to volatile, and then extracted from the method of fractional distillation of the white crystal products.


Camphor is a waxy, flammable, white or clear solid with a strong odor, commonly used to relieve pain, reduce itching, and treat fungal infections. It activates TRPV1 and TRPV3.


Natural camphor is dextrorotatory, while synthetic camphor is racemic, and there is no difference between the two in terms of medical and industrial uses. Its properties are white crystalline powder or colorless translucent hard lumps. It has a stimulating odor, and tastes pungent at the beginning and pungent and cool at the end. Easily soluble in chloroform, ethe*, ethanol, fatty oils or volatile oils, insoluble in water, melting point is 176-181 ℃. Sublimation at room temperature, ignition is easy to burn a large amount of black smoke and light flames. It should be sealed and kept in a cool place.

 

The Application & Function of Camphor

Camphor is mainly utilized in traditional Chinese medicine formulations for its cooling, aromatic and pain-relieving effects. Camphor is often used in rubber cream, tincture, ointment, oil and ointment. Camphor has a strong sense of coolness and aromatic odor, skin irritant drug activity, antiseptic activity, insect repellent and anti-moth activity, as well as nitrocellulose and other special materials such as good plasticizing properties, therefore, camphor in the pharmaceutical intermediates, environmentally friendly anti-moth agent, spices, incense, industrial raw materials and other fields have been widely used.
