N-Acetylneuraminic acid is a sialic monosaccharide prevalent on glycoproteins of cell membranes and glycolipids of mammalian cells. It plays a biological role in neurotransmission, leucocyte vascular exudation, and viral or bacterial infection.

The Application & Function

N-Acetylneuraminic acid In medicine, the glycolipids that contain sialic acid are called gangliosides, which play a very important role in the production and development of the brain and nervous system. Meanwhile, animal studies have shown that decreased levels of ganglioside are associated with early malnutrition and decreased learning ability, and sialic acid supplementation can improve learning behavior in animals. Once a baby is born, the sialic acid in breast milk is essential to ensure their normal development. The study showed that sialic acid levels in mothers decreased over time after delivery. Moreover, sialic acid levels also showed a clear correlation with DHA levels, suggesting that it is most likely related to the development of brain structure and function in infants, and that both may be beneficial for early brain development.
