Lipoic acid, with the molecular formula C8H14O2S2, is an organic compound that can act as a coenzyme to participate in acyl transfer in the metabolism of substances in the body, and can eliminate free radicals that lead to accelerated aging and disease. The Application & Function of Alpha-Lipoic Acid
As a coenzyme, lipoic acid plays a role in two key oxidative decarboxylation reactions, namely in pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and α- Ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex catalyzes the generation and transfer of acyl groups. Lipoic acid can accept the acetyl group of acyl group and pyruvate to form a thioester bond, and then transfer the acetyl group to the sulfur atom of coenzyme A. The dihydrolipoamide forming the auxiliary group can be oxidized by dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (NAD+is required) to regenerate oxidized lipoamide. α- Lipoic acid has a disulfide five-membered ring structure, high electronic density, significant electrophilicity and the ability to react with free radicals, so it has antioxidant properties, high health care functions and medical value (such as anti-fatty liver and lowering plasma cholesterol). In addition, the sulfhydryl group of lipoic acid is easy to undergo oxidation-reduction reaction, so it can protect the sulfhydryl enzyme from the toxicity of heavy metal ions. Lipoic acid is widely distributed in nature, especially in liver and yeast cells. In food, lipoic acid and vitamin B1 often exist at the same time. The human body can synthesize.
