The Introductction of Quinine
Quinine, also known as cinchona cream and cinchona base, is the main alkaloid in the bark of the cinchona tree and its congeners of the Rubiaceae family.
Quinine chemically belongs to the quinoline class, and isomeric with quinidine. It is a white amorphous powder or crystalline, odorless, with a very bitter taste. Melting point 172.8°C, with levophoricity, [α]D20-168° (ethanol). Soluble in ethanol, chloroform, benzene, ethe*, slightly soluble in water. Its dilute sulfuric acid solution has blue fluorescence, add bromine water and excess ammonia drop by drop, it will show emerald green.
Quinine is one of the oldest antimalarial drugs. As early as the 15th century, cinchona bark containing quinine has been widely used as a potent drug for malaria treatment, and its antimalarial effect is similar to that of chloroquine, which works by interfering with DNA synthesis.
The Application & function of Quinine
Quinine is used clinically in patients with Plasmodium vivax infection resistant to chloroquine. It is also used for Plasmodium interna and Plasmodium falciparum. All medical uses are salts of quinine. The sulfate is for oral administration and the hydrochloride is for injection.
Quinine inhibits the intraerythrocytic phase of various Plasmodium species and controls the onset of malaria symptoms. It also has some effect on the gametophytes of Plasmodium interna and Plasmodium tris. However, it has no effect on the extra-erythrocytic stage.
In addition to medicinal use, quinine can be used in analytical chemistry as a detecting agent for metal ions such as bismuth and platinum, and as a precipitant for racemic organic acids.
