The Introductction of Tetracaine
Tetracaine is a topical local anesthetic that acts by interfering with the entry of sodium ions into nerve cell inputs.
Tetracaine, chemically known as 4-(butylamino)-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl benzoate, is a white crystalline powder with molecular formula C15H24N2O2, molecular weight 264.36300, density 1.044 g/cm3, boiling point 389.4ºC at 760 mmHg, and flash point 189.3ºC.
The local anesthetic effect of Tetracaine is stronger than that of procaine, which is 10 times greater than that of procaine. Toxicity is also greater than procaine, 10-12 times greater than procaine. It can penetrate mucous membrane, mainly used for mucosal anesthesia. Rapid action, effective in 1 to 3 minutes. Maintain 2-3 hours. Ophthalmology uses 0.5%-1% solution, no serious adverse reactions such as corneal damage. For rhinolaryngology, 1%-2% solution, the total amount should not exceed 20 ml. 1 drop of 0.1% epinephrine hydrochloride solution should be added to every 3 ml. For infiltration anesthesia, use 0.025% to 0.03% solution, and for nerve conduction block, use 0.1% to 0.3% solution. For lumbar anesthesia, 10 to 1
The Application & Function of Tetracaine
Tetracaine is mainly used for epidural block, subarachnoid block, nerve conduction block, and mucosal surface anesthesia.
Adverse reactions of Tetracaine.
1. Toxic reactions: The potency of this product is 10 times stronger than that of procaine, and the toxicity is also 10 times higher than that of procaine, and the incidence of toxic reactions is also higher than that of procaine, often caused by large doses, rapid absorption or improper operation, such as accidental injection into blood vessels to make the blood concentration too high. Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, dizziness, followed by chills, tremors, panic, and finally convulsions and coma, as well as respiratory failure and drop in blood pressure, which require timely resuscitation.
2. Allergic reactions: can cause sudden death in allergic patients, even during surface anesthesia.
3. may produce rash or urticaria, edema of the face, mouth or (and) tongue and throat area, etc.
