The Introductction of Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim (TMP for short) is an organic compound with chemical formula C14H18N4O3. It is a white or light yellow crystalline powder, odorless, bitter in taste, slightly soluble in chloroform, ethanol or acetone, almost insoluble in water, and easily soluble in glacial acetic acid.
Trimethoprim is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, which is used alone for respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, intestinal tract infection and other diseases, and can be used to treat septicemia, meningitis, otitis media, typhoid fever, shigellosis (bacillary dysentery) caused by sensitive bacteria.
The Application & Function of Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim is a bacterial dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, which is a sulfonamide synergist. Its antibacterial principle is to interfere with folic acid metabolism of bacteria. It is mainly to selectively inhibit the activity of dihydrofolate reductase of bacteria, so that dihydrofolate cannot be reduced to tetrahydrofolate, thus inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria. Trimethoprim had antibacterial activity against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria;
In addition, trimethoprim also has certain effects on malaria parasites and some fungi, such as Nocardia, Histoplasma and yeast. Among gram-positive bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae was sensitive to trimethoprim. Among gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Proteus mirabilis, Pneumonia, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Bordetella pertussis, etc. are sensitive to trimethoprim. Trimethoprim has no antibacterial effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, meningococcus and Bacillus alcaligenes
