The Introductction of Florfenicol
Florfenicol is a synthetic monofluorine derivative of methylsulfonamycin with the molecular formula C12H14Cl2FNO4S. It is a white or off-white crystalline powder, odorless, very slightly soluble in water and chloroform, slightly soluble in glacial acetic acid, and soluble in methanol and ethanol. It is a new broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent of chloramphenicol class for veterinary use, which was successfully developed in the late 1980s.
Florfenicol is an antibiotic drug, which produces broad-spectrum antibacterial effect by inhibiting the activity of peptidyl transferase, and has a wide antibacterial spectrum, including various Gram-positive and negative bacteria and mycoplasma. Sensitive bacteria include Haemophilus, Shigella, Salmonella, E. coli, Pneumococcus, H. influenzae, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Chlamydia, Leptospira, Rickettsia, etc. in cattle and pigs. The product can enter the bacterial cell through lipid solubility, and mainly acts on the 50s subunit of the 70s ribosome of bacteria, inhibiting the transpeptidase, blocking the growth of peptidase, inhibiting the formation of peptide chain, thus preventing the synthesis of protein and achieving antibacterial purpose.
Florfenicol is rapidly absorbed orally, widely distributed, with long half-life, high blood concentration and long blood maintenance time.
Florfenicol was initially used mainly in aquaculture for the treatment of pseudonuclear pasteurellosis and streptococcal disease in yellowtail and natural outbreaks of boils in Atlantic salmon with remarkable effectiveness.
