Chloroquine diphosphate is an antimalarial and anti-inflammatory drug widely used to treat malaria and rheumatoid arthritis. Chloroquine is an inhibitor of autophagy and toll-like receptors (TLRs).
Function:
Chloroquine can cause the nucleus of Plasmodium to fragment, the vacuoles appear between the cells, and the plasmodium pigment aggregates. It is known that chloroquine cannot directly kill Plasmodium, but can interfere with its reproduction. The mechanism of action is that this product has strong binding force with nuclear protein. It is inserted between the two strands of the double helix of DNA and can form a complex with DNA, thus preventing DNA replication and RNA transcription. Chloroquine can also inhibit phosphoric acid incorporation into DNA and RNA of Plasmodium and interfere with Plasmodium reproduction. Chloroquine accumulates in large amounts in infected erythrocytes and is concentrated in the food vesicles and lysosomes of protozoa.
