The Introductction of Albendazole

Albendazole is an imidazole derivative broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug.

Albendazole can be used clinically for the deworming of roundworms, pinworms, tapeworms, whipworms, hookworms, and fecal roundworms. After metabolized to sulfoxide or sulfone in the body, it inhibits the uptake of glucose by the parasite, leading to glycogen depletion of the worm, or inhibits the yohimbe acid reductase system, hindering the production of ATP and preventing the parasite from surviving and reproducing.

Albendazole is insoluble in water, so it is slowly absorbed in the intestinal tract. The original drug is converted into prothiobenzimidazole-sulfoxide and prothiobenzimidazole-sulfone in the liver, the former being the insecticidal component.

Usage and dosage

For the treatment of hookworm, roundworm, pinworm and whipworm, 0.4g is taken orally. For simple pinworm and simple roundworm infections in children over 2 years old, 0.2g is taken in a single dose.

Treatment of cysticercosis: 15-20mg/kg per day, divided into 2 doses. 10 days is a course of treatment. After stopping the drug for 15-20 days, the second course of treatment can be carried out. Usually 2-3 courses of treatment. Treatment can be repeated if necessary.

For other parasites such as fecal roundworms, take 400 mg daily for 6 days. Children under 12 years of age should be given half the dose. It can be chewed, swallowed or crushed and taken together with food.
