Quinine, also known as cinchona, with the molecular formula of C20H24N2O2, is the main alkaloid in the bark of the Rubiaceae plant Cinchona tree and its relatives. It is a drug used to treat and prevent malaria and can treat pyrosis.
Function:
This drug is a derivative of quinoline, which has a strong killing effect on the internal erythrocyte schizonts of various Plasmodium. This drug can bind to Plasmodium DNA, form a complex, inhibit DNA replication and RNA transcription, and thus inhibit protozoan protein synthesis, but the effect is weaker than chloroquine. This drug can also reduce the oxygen consumption of Plasmodium, inhibit the phosphorylase in Plasmodium and interfere with its glucose metabolism. This drug also causes malarial pigment agglutination, but it develops slowly and rarely forms large clumps. In the blood, a certain concentration of this drug can cause the premature rupture of the parasitized red blood cells, thus preventing the maturation of schizonts.
