The Introductction of AMINOPHYLLINE

 

Aminophylline is a compound salt of theophylline and ethylenediamine. Its pharmacological effect mainly comes from theophylline, and its water solubility is enhanced by ethylenediamine. It is insoluble in methanol, ethanol and ether, and has a direct relaxing effect on the smooth muscle of the respiratory tract.


Aminophylline relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and also relaxes various smooth muscles of the intestine and biliary tract, and has a relieving effect on congestion and edema of bronchial mucosa. Aminophylline increases cardiac output, dilates the output and input renal small arteries, increases glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow, and inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions from the distal renal tubules.

 

Aminophylline increases contractility of isolated skeletal muscle; improves muscle contractility in the setting of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Theophylline increases ventilatory insufficiency during hypoxia is thought to be the result of its increased contraction of the diaphragm, and its action in this regard exceeds that of the respiratory center.

 

The Application & Function of AMINOPHYLLINE

 

Aminophylline is used in the treatment of bronchial asthma and asthma-like bronchitis, and its combination with beta agonists may improve its efficacy. In persistent asthma, aminophylline is often used in combination with adrenocorticosteroids for treatment.

Aminophylline is used to treat asthma in acute cardiac insufficiency and heart failure (cardiogenic asthma).
