It is primarily against gram-positive pathogens, and not effective against gram-negative bacteria such as Neisserie gonorrhoeae or Neisseria meningitidis,also used against susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphlylococci which usually can also be treated with penicillin or erythromycin
